Choose whichever brand your best local installer is certified for, because both make solid architectural shingles. GAF Timberline HDZ leads on installation features and its wind warranty, while CertainTeed Landmark leads on weight and color blending. Price barely separates them: roughly $105 to $165 a square for materials and about $450 to $750 a square installed for either one.
The comparison comes down to four points.
- Construction. Landmark is the heavier, thicker shingle; Timberline HDZ is lighter, with a wide StrikeZone nailing area.
- Wind. GAF's WindProven warranty has no maximum wind speed with qualifying accessories; CertainTeed's tops out at 130 mph.
- Price. Landmark usually costs $10 to $25 a square more in materials, or roughly $900 to $1,300 more on a 2,500-square-foot roof.
- Appearance. GAF's colors are bolder and higher in contrast; CertainTeed's blend more softly.
What is the difference between GAF and CertainTeed?
GAF and CertainTeed, two of the largest shingle manufacturers in North America, take different approaches. CertainTeed's Landmark series is built heavy, with two thick layers that sit high on the roof. GAF focuses on installation and on selling a complete system. Its Timberline HDZ has a wide nailing strip called the StrikeZone, designed to reduce crew errors and speed up installation.
The materials also differ. CertainTeed uses a high-grade asphalt blend that stays flexible in cold weather and dries out more slowly in heat. GAF uses its own Dura Grip adhesive and a fiberglass mat engineered for tensile strength. CertainTeed emphasizes ruggedness and GAF emphasizes engineering, and CertainTeed is often priced slightly higher at the same tier.
CertainTeed Landmark is the heavier shingle
Roofers often judge a shingle by how much a square weighs (a square is 100 square feet of roof). Landmark is one of the heavier standard architectural shingles, and Landmark Pro is heavier still. The extra weight is extra asphalt, which is why the shingle looks thick and lies flat.
Timberline HDZ is somewhat lighter. GAF's position is that weight is not the same as strength, and its Advanced Protection Shingle Technology is designed to deliver durability with less bulk. Exact weights vary by product line and plant. For an older house with undersized rafters, compare both spec sheets; most modern framing handles either one.
GAF Timberline HDZ usually costs less per square
GAF Timberline HDZ usually costs less per square than CertainTeed Landmark, and the gap stays fairly steady as regional demand and oil prices change.
| Tier | GAF | CertainTeed |
|---|---|---|
| Standard architectural (per square) | Timberline HDZ: $105 to $125 | Landmark: $120 to $145 |
| Premium designer (per square) | Slateline or Grand Canyon: $200 to $280 | Grand Manor or Presidential Shake: $350 to $500 |
| Full material system, 2,000 sq ft roof | $3,500 to $5,000 | $4,200 to $6,500 |
Shingle prices exclude underlayment, ice and water shield, ridge caps and starter strips; the system figures include them.
Labor depends on the crew. Many roofing companies prefer GAF because the StrikeZone lets them work faster. A GAF roof might take one day where a CertainTeed roof takes a day and a half, if the ridge details are more involved or the shingles heavier, which can make the GAF labor quote slightly lower.
GAF has the edge on wind coverage
Wind damages more asphalt roofs than any other cause, and wind coverage is where GAF has the advantage. Timberline HDZ carries GAF's WindProven limited wind warranty: when it is installed with GAF starter strips, ridge caps and leak barriers, the warranty has no maximum wind speed. It relies on LayerLock, a mechanical bond between the two shingle layers. GAF also promotes the StrikeZone as a much wider nailing area than older shingles, which makes it harder for a crew to miss the common bond.
CertainTeed relies on CertaSeal, a modified asphalt sealant that stays tacky in cooler weather. Its standard wind warranty is usually 110 mph, rising to 130 mph with CertainTeed starter and hip and ridge pieces. For context, the IBHS Roof 101 guide notes that the ASTM D3161 Class F wind test is run at 110 mph. CertainTeed offers no unlimited wind warranty, although the shingle's weight helps keep it on the roof. CertainTeed's NailTrak is a narrower target than GAF's StrikeZone, but it gives installers three printed lines to aim for so each nail passes through both layers.
Both brands fight algae with copper granules
The black streaks on many roofs are Gloeocapsa magma, a type of algae, and both brands fight it with copper-bearing granules. GAF's version, StainGuard Plus, uses engineered capsules that release copper ions slowly over the years, and most GAF architectural shingles carry a 25-year algae warranty.
CertainTeed's version is StreakFighter, a heavy application of copper-coated granules across the surface. Standard Landmark has a shorter algae warranty than GAF, with longer coverage on some higher-tier lines. Both perform well in humid climates, but GAF's 25 years on HDZ is about the longest available on a standard architectural shingle. How long the copper protection actually lasts depends on the site: under large shade trees or near the coast, the granules wear faster than on a dry, sunny lot.
GAF looks bolder, CertainTeed more traditional
The two brands look noticeably different from the street. Timberline HDZ has a strong, high-contrast shadow line that looks thick and three-dimensional, similar to wood shakes. GAF's "Ultra HD" colors are bold, including bright reds, deep greens and charcoal grays, designed to make the roof stand out.
Landmark is more understated, with softer transitions between granule colors and a more traditional, natural look. Both brands' color ranges vary by region, so ask what your local supplier stocks. If you want to match a historic style or blend in with neighboring houses, CertainTeed's palette usually makes that easier.
A lifetime warranty lasts only while you own the house
A "lifetime" shingle warranty generally lasts only as long as the original owner owns the house, as the roof warranty guide explains. GAF has three main upgrade levels: System Plus, Silver Pledge and Golden Pledge. System Plus covers the whole roofing system and extends the non-prorated period on materials. Golden Pledge, the top tier, adds long-term coverage for installation errors and is available only from GAF Master Elite contractors.
CertainTeed starts with SureStart protection, which CertainTeed's warranty overview says covers 100 percent of material and labor costs for three, five or 10 years and is "not prorated or otherwise reduced." Above that are the 3-Star, 4-Star and 5-Star extended warranties. The 5-Star, offered through SELECT ShingleMaster contractors, covers the contractor's workmanship for 25 years, and the higher tiers also pay to remove the old shingles if there is a manufacturing defect.
Both brands set the same condition: to qualify for upgraded coverage, the roof needs the manufacturer's own accessories, including starter strips, ridge caps and underlayment.
Both brands fail in the same few ways
Both brands fail in the same few ways as they age. Older asphalt shingles of any brand can develop crazing, a network of fine surface cracks that forms as the oils bake out. It is often cosmetic but can lead to granule loss. A GAF roof installed by an uncertified crew that ignores the StrikeZone can still be nailed too high, which lets shingles slide off later.
Blistering affects both brands. Moisture trapped in the shingle during manufacturing expands in the sun, forming small bubbles that pop and take granules with them. A poorly ventilated attic makes it worse, because the hot deck heats the shingles from below until they turn brittle and crack early.
Product lines compared
| Tier | GAF | CertainTeed |
|---|---|---|
| Standard architectural | Timberline HDZ: installation features and wind warranty | Landmark: asphalt weight and color blending |
| Upgraded architectural | Timberline UHDZ: noticeably thicker than HDZ, with deeper shadow lines | Landmark Pro: "Max Def" colors and an extra layer of asphalt |
| Luxury slate look | Camelot II: slate appearance at a fraction of the cost of stone | Grand Manor: heavy multi-layer shingle with more depth than Camelot |
The everyday matchup is Timberline HDZ against Landmark. One step up, Timberline UHDZ (Ultra High Definition) competes with Landmark Pro, whose extra asphalt layer holds up much better to foot traffic and small hail.
At the luxury end, Grand Manor is one of the heaviest shingles sold anywhere. It requires a strong roof structure and an experienced crew, and many homeowners consider it the best of the luxury options.
Which is better in hail country, GAF or CertainTeed?
In hail-prone regions such as the Midwest's "Hail Alley," the impact-rated product line matters more than the brand. CertainTeed offers NorthGate and ClimateFlex, SBS-modified shingles that flex like rubber and absorb impacts better than standard shingles. GAF's equivalent is Timberline AS II, which is also Class 4 impact-rated.
On the hurricane coast, WindProven is a real advantage, since a warranty with no wind speed limit is valuable when tropical storms arrive. In the South and Southwest, where sun is the main threat, both brands sell reflective "cool" colors, although attic ventilation does more than brand to keep shingles from overheating.
Questions to ask the contractor
The installer matters more than the brand. A poorly installed CertainTeed roof will fail sooner than a well-installed GAF roof, and the reverse is also true.
- What certification do you hold? GAF Master Elite or CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster status is required for the best warranties.
- How many squares of each brand do you install a year? A crew that installs 500 GAF roofs a year knows the StrikeZone far better than one that uses GAF occasionally.
- Which underlayment and starter will you use? Mixing brands, such as GAF shingles on CertainTeed underlayment, usually voids the extended warranty.
- Can I have a line-item estimate with the exact shingle model? "Architectural shingles" on a quote is not specific enough.
Poor attic ventilation can void either warranty
Both manufacturers agree that a poorly ventilated attic voids or severely limits the warranty. Shingles need cool air moving under the deck to prevent heat buildup. GAF sells the Cobra ridge vent, designed to work with Timberline, and CertainTeed makes ShingleVent II.
The usual baseline is one square foot of net free vent area per 150 square feet of attic floor, which the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association notes can drop to 1 per 300 in some cases, split evenly between intake (soffit) and exhaust (ridge). A 1,500-square-foot attic therefore needs 5 to 10 square feet of net free area. If an estimate doesn't mention ventilation, the brand choice matters little, since either shingle will fail early on an overheated roof.
GAF leads on shingle recycling and solar
GAF runs a "Roof-to-Road" recycling program that grinds old shingles into road paving instead of sending them to landfill. It also makes Timberline Solar, a shingle with built-in solar cells.
CertainTeed, owned by Saint-Gobain, emphasizes product life-cycle and recycled content in its shingles and underlayments. Both brands' shingles are still mostly petroleum-based, so the most sustainable roof is one that lasts its full life and is recycled at tear-off where a program exists.
Cost on a 2,500-square-foot roof
A 2,500-square-foot roof usually needs about 28 to 30 squares of shingles once waste and overlaps are counted. Your roof will differ, so get your actual square count from the roofing calculator and substitute it into the figures below.
| Cost item | GAF Timberline HDZ | CertainTeed Landmark |
|---|---|---|
| Materials (shingles, starter, ridge, underlayment) | $4,500 to $5,200 | $5,400 to $6,200 |
| Labor, overhead and accessories (mid-sized city) | $7,000 to $11,000 | $7,000 to $11,300 |
| Total before tear-off | $11,500 to $16,200 | $12,400 to $17,500 |
On a typical house, CertainTeed costs roughly $900 to $1,300 more, or about 5 to 10 percent. Whether the extra asphalt and weight justify that premium is a personal decision.
Timberline HDZ for wind and budget, Landmark for weight
The choice mostly depends on the house and the climate. In a windy area or on a tight budget, Timberline HDZ offers the most protection per dollar, and its unlimited wind warranty and easy installation make it a safe choice for most ordinary homes.
If you plan to stay 30 years and want a shingle with real weight and depth, choose Landmark or Landmark Pro. CertainTeed also tends to suit high-end homes where the roof is a major part of the design.
Finally, consider which brand local crews know best. Some regions are dominated by GAF, with certified crews and parts easy to find, while others favor CertainTeed. Choosing the brand your best local contractor installs is often the right move, since that contractor will know the manufacturer's details and warranty paperwork. Whichever you choose, get the manufacturer-backed warranty registration in writing when the job is finished, as it is the only proof the roof was installed to the manufacturer's standards.
GAF vs CertainTeed questions
Is GAF or CertainTeed better?
Neither is better for every house. Timberline HDZ has the wide nailing zone and the WindProven warranty, while Landmark is heavier and its colors blend more softly. The installer usually matters more than the brand on the bundle.
Which costs more, GAF or CertainTeed?
CertainTeed, by a small margin. Landmark tends to cost about $10 to $25 a square more than Timberline HDZ for materials, which works out to roughly 5 to 10 percent on a full installed job.
What is the best GAF warranty?
Golden Pledge. It is GAF's top tier and the one that provides long-term coverage for installation errors. It is available only through a GAF Master Elite contractor installing a qualifying GAF system.
How long do GAF and CertainTeed shingles last?
About 25 to 30 years in practice, although both carry a lifetime limited warranty. Attic ventilation, weather and installation quality affect the real lifespan more than the brand does.
